Vertex

Vertex

Vertex

A vertex is a place that matters . . . it's important. It's just like how these two rams have decided this point and place matters. They chose this spot as a location to establish security for the herd on the other side of the ridge.

Vertexes make things specific; all it takes is for two people to come into agreement . . . whatever the idea is and whatever the project is, there needs to be an agreement and then it can happen.

Where general ideas begin with something specific, common ideas and motivations come into alignment. When this happens, magic can begin to happen because now there is a specific point of agreement to start. Without the vertex, nothing will happen.

Looking Towards Saint Benedict's Monastery

From their remote and private perch, these three otherwise nondescript, abandoned fence posts get to enjoy the changing scenery of one of the world’s greatest views every day.

Their message is that the world may have discarded you and not placed much value on your worth—yet in spite of that, you can carve out your own private and special place that creates unending joy and fascination for you alone.

Dawn at Capitol Peak

Out of all the 50+ fourteeners (14,000+ ft high mountains) in Colorado, Capitol Peak is among the most unique and iconic—and this picture helps emphasize why that is so. It seems that no matter which direction you’re coming from, Capitol Peak is like the model, actress, or beauty queen that looks good from any angle. It seems like you always find something special when it is your model.

Owl Creek Pasture #2

Owl Creek is the backroad from Aspen to Snowmass. The road begins at Buttermilk Ski Resort, winds around the airport, and goes up through these beautiful hidden pastures where horses and elk graze for 8 months out of the year. This shot is taken in the direction of Snowmass Ski Resort with Mount Daly in the distance.

The remarkable symmetry of the scene displays the beauty of the delicate marriage between man and the earth. The grassy hills yield lush harvests and the sky casts gentle shadows on the plains, conveying the simple tranquility found in this corner of the world.

A big part of being able to take great photographs is being in the right place at the right time. This is one of those occasions.

This was my first trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. We drove every available trail to find the best vantage points, and as we were turning around to head back to the main center, I happened to notice this peak with something on top. So we stopped the truck, and I walked about 100 yards through the bushes until the figures in the distance came into a clearer view.

The couple stood together atop a sand dune, paused in their journey in order to converse with one another. I thought it was a poetic scene: man and woman exploring the world together. The landscape rolls before them, showcasing that the world is their oyster—and that their story continues.

The Loner

The Loner

This was taken on our second pass in the helicopter around Mount Sopris on a spectacular Saturday morning in March of 2018. First of all, it is a surreal experience to be in a helicopter after fresh snow—and to tour among the 14,000+ ft. Rocky Mountain peaks.

It’s almost an out-of-body experience to absorb all of the astounding visual images from that vantage point, but despite the kaleidoscope twirling through my head, I noticed this speck on the ridge.

How I noticed him, I can’t say. But there he was. So, I let the helicopter pilot know we needed to pause and find out what was happening down there. Eventually, we got close enough to realize this lone skier was in the process of climbing to the very top of Mount Sopris so he could have the privilege of carving fresh turns all the way to the bottom.

I am proud to have captured this incredible moment. It speaks of the extent to which people will go to when they are driven by nothing other than a love of life and nature.

As if suspended in outer-space, this indigo blue amalgamation of texture boasts hypnotic qualities. Crackling details draw drama to this abstract.

The dynamic and deep surface transports the viewer to some otherworldly place, with its shimmering streams and dark blue spots peppered through a mysterious Milky Way—gleaming to a near-perfection.

Mountain Bluebirds are a beautiful but solitary lot. You rarely see them together, but they seem perfectly fine roaming alone in the piercing cold weather, perched on snowy branches and fence posts to scout the area for food. They even seem to swell with joy during the big flake snowstorms that hit in April.

This Mountain Bluebird’s poignant stance and knowing stare as the bitter cold whips around it reminds me that there is splendor and life in every corner of the world, no matter how frigid.

Mystery at Maroon Bells

One of the things that immediately impacts travelers out to the Rocky Mountains is the vastness of the territory and the immense height of the mountain ranges. This particular view not only speaks to the mystery and mood of the mountains, but the cloud in the distance speaks to the fact that no matter how high you go, there is always something higher. Maroon Bells is one of the 58 "fourteeners" in Colorado—mountains over 14,000 feet high.

The beautiful Snake River flows through Keystone, Colorado. For most of the year, it quietly blends in as a nice complementary feature to all of the other views—but in the winter, it makes a special, distinctive statement that adds dramatically to the character of the resort.

The snowy scene bears a cinematic quality—it’s like a backdrop to a dream.

Dog Sled, Sunset, Snowmass, CO

Radiant and warm against the chilly Snowmass frontier, on this quiet afternoon I could tell the sky was on fire. In pursuit of a better view, I drove beyond the Snowmass Ski Resort up to the highest point, a little past the Krabloonik Dog Kennels.

From my new station, I was blessed with this incredible view of the blazing sky, and right at that moment, to my surprise, came the dog sled returning from a tour. As it turned the corner, I captured the swift motion—seizing this gorgeous moment that displayed the magic Snowmass offers.

Sunset, McClain Flats, Aspen

Contrasting versions of rural life exist on either side of McClain Flats in Aspen, Colorado. On one side, there is a working farm family that has been there for generations. Upon surveying their land, you can see it is pristine—its layout placing an emphasis on function.

Across the street, there’s a wealthy retail-owner from downtown Aspen, who loves the countryside outside of town. Their land provides wide open spaces for horses, beautiful shrubs, and flowers.

The old and the new share the same road—two different lives sharing space as if representing two sides of a coin. There’s a beautiful symmetry to it.

The eyes are the window to the soul.

This little girl's eyes called out to me from the next booth at Donte's Restaurant in West Palm Beach one morning. I noticed she was essentially in a temporary hostage situation that she couldn't get out of—breakfast with her grandmother and her grandmother's friends.

The group was chattering and conversing over their meal, obviously discussing little things that bored the girl to death. At the moment I shot this picture, I thought she was reaching out to me or anyone else who could come and get her away. There was no escaping the situation, but her eyes said she wished there was. Little would she know, this would become a timeless image.

Something about the clarity of her feelings stirred me to mull over the involvement our souls truly have with our eyes. Through them, we not only behold the world, but the world beholds us.

I love things that are hidden in plain view. This particular image caught my eye immediately and forced me to make every effort to record it—so I could share with others.

This photograph’s blue hues and iris-like patterns never cease to fascinate me . . . and I've been greatly encouraged by the effect this image has on other viewers as well. In fact, one well known artist has been so infatuated with it, she has it on her computer as a screensaver— inspiring her each time she logs in.

It’s the cool color and almost snowy texture that elevates this photograph to a crisp, mesmerizing work of art.

Dream, Santa Fe

Dream, Santa Fe

No trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico is complete without a leisurely stroll to enjoy the beautiful and often surprising visual delights of the art galleries on Canyon Road.

There are more than one hundred galleries, boutiques, and restaurants within one-half mile of each other. At the top of the drive, it turns into a residential area—I found this home and was immediately fascinated with the color and composition on the gate to the backyard, and on my second glance, I was captured by the composition including the flaming sun on the left and the word dream on the right.

I realized there was someone special living here with special dreams. To me, it was fitting—because the ultimate purpose of art is to stimulate and inspire one to think of having a beautiful and better life. At its best, art inspires you to create, be productive, and pull out the best things from inside of you and share with others. This simple scene showed me someone living in that house understood that creative journey.

We all deal with stress. And the more stressful life becomes, the more we wish for peaceful, calm places where we can go to regroup and get refreshed. This scene reminds me of places like that.

Ideally, you could look out your window or walk onto your porch and experience a place with such a view—in the absence of that, having a photograph of a magical scene in your home will evoke those same peaceful feelings.

There's something calming about the simplicity of this image and the focus on the iconic symbol of Christianity. The cross, standing proud against the sun, welcomes the beholder to serenity and ease. Everything is at peace.

There’s something magical about quiet time. It allows our subconscious to speak to us. Ideas, details, memories, thoughts that are suppressed in the busy flow of life have a chance to splash back to the surface.

When surfing social media, texting, emailing, and talking on our phones today, the outside world is blocked out. This is our quiet time. Our hushed serenity. We don’t hear the noise and chaos of life around us . . . We have temporarily escaped to our own private world. This is our time for ourselves and it is important to make it a regular part of your day. Your mental break. Your meditation. Your prayer time. Your planning time. Your thinking time.

And after all, it’s the ability to think and feel emotion that Is a big part of what makes us human.

I’m frequently amazed by the ability of abstract color images to mesmerize and create a variety of engaging emotional responses. They force you to stop and think and wake up your imagination. They challenge you to make some sense of what you are seeing, it doesn’t matter what others say, it matters what you see.

The complexity of the colors here seem to explode with electricity and intrigue. Perhaps it’s reminiscent of craters, outer space, or ancient minerals. It could remind you of a place you been, and experience you’ve had, another image from your past. It could be anything—but the important thing is that it gets you thinking and deciding for yourself . . . when you are allowing yourself to be challenged. What you come up with may surprise you.

What is actually happening here? It’s for you to decide

What makes this image especially fun is not only the color—but that the white figure seems to be its own creation, with its own personality, ready for fun and adventure. It carries a simple but playful energy . . . a type of childlike wonder

One day, I may even craft Boo into a cuddly animal to give to kids, but for now it will remain a happy image.
